Jessie C. Mullins was born to Alfonso and Johnnie Cunningham on March 29, 1928 in Docena, Alabama.
She confessed Christ at an early age and joined St. Paul CME Church, Docena. She later joined the McComb Chapel AME Zion Church, Pratt City.
On January 16, 1954, she united in Holy Matrimony with the late Robert A, Mullins, Sr.. To this union, one son was born, Robert A. Mullins, Jr..
After her marriage in 1954, she joined the Bethel AME Church Ensley where she served faithfully for 67 years. At Bethel, she was a member of the Steward Board, Stewardess Board, and Women’s Missionary Society.
She attended Docena Elementary and was a graduate of the Westfield High School Class of 1945. In 1950, she received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Alabama State University. In 1971, she received the Master of Education Degree from Alabama A&M University.
Her teaching career expanded over 37 years beginning in Union Springs, Alabama. The next year, she received employment in the Jefferson County School System where she taught for 36 years. Among the schools she worked were Brighton Elementary School, Ketona Elementary School, and Gardendale Elementary School where she worked until retirement.
She was a member of Club 54, a social and civic group for women in Birmingham where she served in various leadership roles. She loved Alabama State University and was a member of the ASU National Alumni Association. She created the Jessie C. Mullins and Robert A. Mullins, Jr. Scholarship through the ASU Trust for Excellence. The scholarship awards annual scholarships to deserving ASU students in the Birmingham area majoring in Education.
Jessie loved reading the Bible and Devotionals. She also enjoyed attending church and talking and spending time with relatives and friends. Jessie was beautiful and warm, loving and positive, full of optimism and encouragement. She leaves a legacy of strong faith, dedicated discipleship and a passionate love of God.
Jessie C. Mullins leaves to cherish her memory: a son, Robert A. Mullins, Jr.; cousins; God daughter, Janice (Robert) Ross of Stone Mountain, GA; her Bethel AME Church family; other relatives and friends.
