Gloria Veasley, M.Ed. Obituary

Gloria Hill Veasley was born February 18, 1937, in Birmingham, Alabama. Gloria was the second of eight children born to Robert Olivia Hill and Fannie (Dunklin) Hill, Robert’s second wife.  Through her father and his first wife, eight children were born so Gloria was actually the 10th child in the family. Gloria and her siblings from Fannie were all two years apart in age, a credit to their mother.

She attended Council Elementary School and graduated with academic honors from Western Olin High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Gloria attended Miles College where she studied Education and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in that academic discipline.

After completing her undergraduate education, Gloria became a math teacher in Lee County, Alabama.  Through the years she taught at several schools throughout Lee, Chambers and Jefferson County Alabama bestowing in hundreds of children her belief that all people should be well educated.  Several years into her professional career, Gloria decided to return to school and eventually earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

In 1965, she married Albert Veasley and to that union one child was born.

In 1975, after her mother’s death, Gloria returned to Birmingham where she assumed the care of her father and nephew, Jeffrey.

The highlights of her life include being active within First Missionary Baptist Church Pratt City where she taught Sunday School and sang in the adult choir.  Gloria was also active and instrumental in the multiple elections and administrations of Birmingham City Councilman, the late Mr. Leroy Bandy. She was also active in extracurricular activities at the schools at which she was an educator.  As a faculty sponsor, she led the Bottenfield Jr. High (now Bottenfield Middle School) Cheerleaders to several awards of distinction and excellence.  At home, Gloria enjoyed gardening and was well known for requesting a cutting sample from any plant that caught her eye.  She also loved classical and jazz piano music.

Gloria was also an avid reader, enjoying a wide range of subjects including mysteries, comedies, romance novels, current events and cross word puzzles.  She and her son, Devron, would spend many evenings solving the Birmingham News crossword puzzle as well as several crossword books she had acquired.

Gloria’s memory and legacy will be carried forward by her son, Devron A. Veasley of Birmingham, Alabama; siblings Nezaree (Hill) King of Birmingham, Alabama, Ann (Hill) May, Mark Hill and Joe Hill all of Atlanta, Georgia. Siblings that preceded Gloria in death are:  Raphael Hill, Vivian (Hill) Thomas, Olivia Hill, Robert Hill, Phamalia (Hill) Lacey, all of Birmingham, Alabama, Ja Cree Hill, Eulalia Hill, Arbra Horton, Altheria Hill, Iona (Hill) Towner, all of Detroit, Michigan, Rex Hill of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
