Eddie Jean Yates, daughter of the late Sam Samuel and Bertie Mae Samuel, was born on January 19, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama. She completed her early education in the public schools of Birmingham, and Lloyd Noland Nursing School. She was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital.
Eddie Jean was united in Holy Matrimony to John E. Yates, Sr., and they were blessed with four children: Linda, John, Jr., Denise and Felicia.
A soft-spoken woman, with a witty sense of humor, Eddie Jean loved the Lord and that love was exhibited through her caring for others. After retirement, she continued private duty nursing with individuals and was “Big Ma” to all of her grandchildren and many neighborhood children.
On Saturday, February 24, 2024, the Lord called Eddie Jean Yates to her eternal home and we firmly believe she is resting in the arms of Jesus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and seven siblings, Thurston Brown, James D. Brown, Charles L. Brown, Mildred Minor, Curtis A. Brown (Annie Mae), Catherine C. Burt, and Porter C. Brown, Sr.
She leaves precious memories with: her children, Linda Y. Steele, John E. Yates, Jr., Denise Y. Williams, and Felicia Burns (Margaro); grandchildren, Ronald L. Steele, Jr., Tierra Yates, Ashleigh Williams, Tierisha Yates, Andrew Steele (Brittany), T’Keyah Yates and Londyn Yates; Great-Grandchildren, Ethan Steele, Jayla Williams, Truth McGowan, Kaden Steele, and Terrion McGowan; God Children, Ebonie Brown and Travic Russell, “special son” Lee Hardnett and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
