Cleo Hicks Bryant was born to the proud parents of Samuel Hicks and Lucinda Fisher on July 6, 1936, in the community of New Hill in Bessemer, AL. Cleo was the fifth of seven children. She was a graduate of Wenonah High School. An outstanding student during her primary education, her love for learning was just as strong at eighty-nine years old. She was a life-long learner with razor sharp recall and excellent attention to detail.
After high school, Cleo met and married James Henry Bryant. From their union came four children: James, Sandra Faye, Gerald Wayne and Lisa Ann Bryant. Responding to God’s divine call for her life, Cleo graduated from Lawson State College, where she excelled and earned credentials to become a full-time Registered Nurse, while being a wife and mother. Cleo was a long-term employee at Lloyd Noland Hospital and Princeton Baptist Medical Center where she retired after thirty-four years of faithful service in Labor and Delivery.
Having accepted Christ at an early age, Cleo lived her life for the Glory of God! She was an avid student of the Bible, who sought to comprehend the Word and its meaning. She endeavored to live out that which she learned and strove to share it with others. She loved Christian music and found comfort and joy from various Christian artists.
Cleo had great love for her family, friends, church community and neighbors. As a mother, she was loving, generous, and accessible. She poured her heart and soul into teaching her children and being a godly example for them. She loved Vacation Bible School and for many years, she looked forward to transporting all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and neighborhood kids to VBS. She rarely met a stranger and was always friendly and willing to engage others in conversation with loving words of encouragement. She had great sensitivity towards those who were hurting. She had the gift of encouragement, which she graciously and lovingly shared with others. She loved humor, flowers and the beauty of God’s diverse creation.
Cleo possessed great interest in many things and a high degree of confidence in her ability to accomplish anything she chose to learn. One of her major interests was cooking. She was an excellent cook and baker. Preparing her favorite meals was not complete until she found others to share her meals with. Exploring new foods was her favorite pastime. She frequently gave praise to God for the abundance of food choices He has allowed us to experience.
Cleo’s husband, James Henry, son, Gerald Wayne, parents, siblings and other relatives have preceded her in death. Left to mourn her memory are her children: son, James Bryant; daughter, Sandra Bryant Smith; and daughter Lisa Ann Bryant and a special relationship with Vivian Reid Bryant. Grandchildren: Candance Callahan (Travis) Thompson, Jamaal Bryant, Akilah Bryant (Emery) Kidd, Alexandria Naima Smith, Ayanna Nicole Smith, Rayven Bryant (Jerome) Fletcher, Kaitlyn Barham, Thomas James Smith, Joi Bryant and Gerald Jackson Bryant. Great-grandchildren: Destiny, Taylor, and Travis Thompson, Jamar Bryant, Alaya Bryant, Jaylen Bryant, Emery Kidd, Jr. and Zoe Kidd. Additionally, she leaves a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, church members, neighbors and mentees to cherish and celebrate a life well lived.
