Benjamin Joseph Andrews was born April 17, 1951 to the late Nettie Mae and Earl Glenn Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama. B.J., as he was affectionately known, accepted Christ at an early age and attended Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ. B.J. received his formal education in the Birmingham City School System and graduated from Western-Olin High School in 1969. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and upon being honorably discharged, B.J. met and married Catherine Johnson. From this union, two children were born, Yvette and Michelle Andrews. Professionally, B.J. worked for Liberty National Life Insurance Company. He had an entrepreneurial spirit that was indomitable. He owned and operated several small businesses to include, but not limited to the following: B.J.’s Carpet Cleaning Service, B.J.’s Insurance Agency, and most recently Andrews Estates, an enterprise where he co-owned and managed his family properties. B.J. was a very hard-working, kind-hearted individual who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He most assuredly enjoyed a good home cooked, soul food meal, on any given day. His hobbies included watching sports on television, playing cards, and talking about politics and current events. He was compassionate, family-oriented, and resourceful. B.J. had the “gift of gab” and didn’t meet a stranger. To be in his presence, B.J. made one feel like a member of his family. In 2004, B.J. married his beloved wife, Lola Eddins Tannehill. They would spend the next twenty years laughing, loving, and taking care of each other. B.J. loved his family. He was always excited for an opportunity to gather with them. B.J. departed this life on September 8, 2024 at home. He leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Lola Andrews; daughters, Yvette (Kenneth) Allen and Michelle Andrews; four beautiful grandchildren Kentray Allen, Kendis Allen, Christopher Andrews, and Caytlyn Owens all of Birmingham, AL. He also leaves to mourn three sisters and three brothers: Annie Ruth Andrews Johnson, Earl Andrews, Jr., Lewis (Mary) Andrews (Baltimore, MD), Priscilla Andrews Files, Willie Andrews, Ann (Weaver) Andrews Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
